San Francisco, CA. –Hitting the road for another cross-country adventure in queer literary performance, it’s SISTER SPIT! The 2013 tour continues the tradition of bringing your new favorite irreverent, wild, brainy and provocative writers and artists to town – with the exciting addition of your new favorite publisher! Sister Spit Books, an imprint of legendary literary freedom-fighters City Lights, will be debuting our first publications on this year’s tour, the must-have anthology Sister Spit: Writings Rants and Reminiscence From the Road, edited by Spit founder Michelle Tea – who will be hosting the 2013 performances as well as reading from her new young adult fantasy novel A Mermaid in Chelsea Creek, a tail of snarky mermaids, radical pigeons and girl heroes freshly out on McSweeney’s. Also debuting on Sister Spit Books is Spit favorite Ali Liebegott’s new novel Cha-Ching!, the story of a young, down-on-her-luck queer girl who falls into a gambling problem as she tries to get by in 1990s Brooklyn, with the help of a rescued pitbull, a bartender-reiki student roommate, and a librarian/stripper maybe-girlfriend. Hear Ali read from both Cha-Ching! And her back-in-print award winning epic road poem The Beautifully Worthless! Sister Spit welcomes the return of van alum Cristy C. Road, the Cuban-American, punk 4 lyfe artist and writer, who will be showing new iconic images while reading from her latest graphic novel SPIT AND PASSION, about coming out, cultural roots and her eternal obsession with Green Day. Sister Spit introduces debut novelist Daniel Levesque, the ‘first boy ever allowed to perform with Sister Spit’ who will be reading from his smashing first book, Hairdresser on Fire, about a psychic gay boy hairdresser who only longs to escape the fascism of the beauty industry and become a circus clown! Also on board is tender-hearted, genderqueer costume-designing accordion-wielding songwriter and performance artist DavEnd, who will dazzle you with excerpts of Fabulous Artistic Gay Guys Get Overtly Traumatized Sometimes: The Musical, an extravaganza exploring the effects of hetero-sexism and street harassment on the development of queer identity. Also back in the van is Australian Sharpie artist TextaQueen, internationally renowned for their use of the humble felt-tip marker to boldly-reinterpret the salon nude, exploring the politics of sex, gender, race and identity along the way. Texta will be showing work from We Don’t Need Another Hero, which features People of Color as heroes of their post-apocalypse.
Butch gamblers, cranky mermaids, psychic hairdressers, accordion-wielding songstresses, punk-obsessed teens and post-apocalyptic heroes, all coming your way on Sister Spit 2013!
The legendary, raucous, rowdy performance gang, Sister Spit, comes to your town with a vanload of multimedia, queer-centric brilliance! Don’t miss this multimedia explosion of taste-makers, novelists, luminaries, chanteuses, performance artists, poets and filmmakers.
The next generation of queer?
Sister Spit was established in San Francisco in the early 1990’s as a weekly all-female open mic series, co-founded by Michelle Tea and Sini Anderson. The duo launched the first Sister Spit national tour in 1997: 2 vans chock-full with cutting-edge dyke female writers and performers. Since its inception, Sister Spit has crossed the country many times and re-merged in 2007 as Sister Spit- Next Generation featuring established writers with young, emerging queer and queer-influenced artists of all genders.
